Black Desert Resort is currently conducting regular blasting to excavate lava rock for an underground parking structure. The blasting occurs at least a couple times a week and has been underway for several months, with at least a few more months to go.
During this afternoon’s blast, I was a few hundred feet from the blast area. The vibration was light but noticeable and brief. However, despite the use of gravel blast covers and water trucks to control dust, a large dust cloud was clearly visible.
Residents across the street in The Reserve report feeling vibrations there too. They are also frustrated by dust from the blasts settling on their homes and outdoor spaces.
Blasting operations are regulated by the State of Utah, not by the City. Contractors are required to take seismic readings during each blast and retain those records. Based on what I’ve learned, Black Desert is following all applicable state guidelines.
That said, compliance with technical requirements doesn’t mean residents aren’t being affected. I’ve requested data from the blasting company to better understand the situation and will share what I learn.
