At the May 8 community open house for the Center Street Fire Station renovation and expansion, I was struck by two very different reactions.
Many residents expressed gratitude that local philanthropist and Ivins resident Geoff Schmidt has pledged $2 million toward the project. But some residents asked, “What’s in it for him? Does he have a conflict of interest in making that donation?” He does. He lives in Ivins.
Geoff Schmidt has been quietly supporting public safety in our community for years. Long before anyone discussed naming opportunities, fundraising campaigns, or major capital projects, Geoff was making annual donations to support police, fire, and EMS services in Ivins.
Most residents never knew about his earlier donations because Geoff preferred to give quietly and without recognition. In fact, the decision to publicly acknowledge his donation came from the City, not from Geoff. We believed his generosity deserved to be recognized. His $2 million commitment dramatically reduces the financial burden of the fire station renovation and expansion that would otherwise fall on taxpayers.

So, will Geoff profit personally from this donation? The answer is both yes and no.
No, he is not receiving ownership of the building. He is not receiving a contract. He is not selling land. He will not supply or charge for materials, equipment, labor, or services. He is not receiving development rights or special treatment from the City. In fact, Geoff has not even asked to have his name placed on the station.
Yes, Geoff will benefit from that improved service. So will my family. So will your family. So will every resident and visitor who may someday need emergency assistance.
The remodel and expansion will allow our firefighters and paramedics to operate from a facility better suited to today’s needs. It will improve working conditions for first responders, accommodate modern equipment, and help ensure that emergency services can continue to meet the needs of our growing community for decades to come.
One of the things I admire most about Geoff’s involvement is that he has never approached these contributions as a transaction. He has approached them as an investment in the community he calls home.
The fire station project itself reflects a true partnership. Geoff’s $2 million gift provides a substantial foundation, but additional grants, private donations, and city funding are also needed to complete the project. The result will be a modern public safety facility that serves Ivins residents for decades to come.
We can certainly disagree about public projects, priorities, and budgets. Those discussions are healthy and important. But when someone chooses to give generously to support their community, I believe it is also important that we recognize that generosity for what it is. In this case, a resident saw a community need and stepped forward to help meet it. That deserves our appreciation.
Whether you choose to support the fundraising campaign or not, I hope we can all recognize the extraordinary generosity of a neighbor who chose to make a historic investment in the safety and well-being of our community.
