Citizen Request… Not Citizen Arrest

I saw a post on nextdoor yesterday saying, “Whoever was responsible for getting the extra stop signs put up on Kayenta… thank you!” I thought this was a good opportunity to make a sales pitch for residents using a “citizen request form” to ask the City to take action on issues. Because that’s what got the stop signs installed. Here’s the story.

You can thank Rob Goodman for the stop signs. He came to a city council meeting on November 2, 2023 and made a citizen request for 4-way stop signs at Kwavasa and Kayenta Parkway. There is a “citizen request” agenda item near the beginning of every city council meeting (so you don’t need to wait through 2- or 3-hour meetings) and they are sometimes amazingly effective, like Rob’s request was. Not all requests get done, but they are all considered.

For example, this Thursday the city council is finally going to start talking about what we as a city need to do to mitigate problems that will be created by Black Desert Resort hosting the PGA this October 10th to 13th – from traffic to parking to nightly rentals, etc. This is finally on the agenda because of… wait for it… a citizen request made by CJ Koharcheck at our last city council meeting.

See, “citizen requests” work. Not sure if we can solve all the problems the event will generate, and I’m sure Black Desert Resort will do a great job minimizing impact. But we need to address stuff like this early enough. Individually we are smart. Together, as a community, we are brilliant, and the “citizen request” portion of each meeting’s agenda is the way to keep Ivins special.

So, I hope to see you at future city council meetings. You do have a voice. And you have a voice that is heard.

Note: fill out a “Citizen Request” form ahead of time (click here for the form) and email it to the city Recorder at kjimenez@ivins.com.
